You see, sometimes staying up till 1am brings good things. Whilst wandering around the back alleyways and dead-end streets of the online video world this evening/ morning, I received a mail from those lovely folks over at Strike.tv informing me that I was eligible to register early for beta-testing of the site. sweet!
So, I dropped everything - Liam Lynch, DekePod, and Videojug (reviews on each of these coming soon, promise!) and went right on ever to register and login. I’ve been watching now for about hour and I have to say that I”m generally impressed. Here’s the low-down so far:
- The shows are, for the most part, lots of fun. There are many good things in store for us viewers and it’s certainly a pleasure watching some the “big guns” of the entertainment industry tackle the Internet format. It is particularly good to see that the shows span more than the ubiquitous comedy genre.
- The website is intuitive as regards finding good things to watch (there’s a huge browse-able gallery at the heart of the homepage, plus the usual rating and comment functions.
- The quality of each show was exceptionally good for online video and I was able to watch all the shows in full-screen mode on my iMac 24” screen with hardly any pixelation.
- I’m not certain how some of these shows intend to continue with additional episodes. Some seem to have been fun one-off’s without much sense of future
- Only about 7 shows are live…but what the hell, it’s still beat testing.
- There is no possibility to embed the videos in other websites (currently)
The best shows so far, in my not-so-humble opinion are:
Daryl from Oncar
an exceptionally funny skit about a 24hour car service that gets a little too involved in the private life of a customer
Life in General
the trials and tribulations behind the scenes of a popular daytime soap, written from a lead writer of several popular daytime soaps - it’s juicy. Even cooler, the fictional soap that they are creating in this show will be another actual show on Strike.tv called Greenvile General
Unknown Sender
looks to be an online “the Twilight Zone” with most likely differing cast and stories for each episode, each dealing with tales gleaned by some unknown online watcher.
Keep Your Eyes Open
I’m excited about this. We’ve already seen what it looks like when the studios go full-bore into the online world with Gemini Division and now we’re seeing what the creative folks do with it. It should be fun, so keep your eyes and RSS feeds open!
