I am such a geek for documentaries. There’s something some inherently fascinating to me about getting an unfettered peek into someone else’s life. I guess that’s why the Bindelstiff Family Cirkus really appeals to me. That and because of the fact that the series is so well done.
If you haven’t had the chance to go watch them I’d seriously encourage you to drop everything and go check them out. The show, for those of you still interested in reading – and who haven’t read my previous post, is about the owner operators of one of America’s last independent small circus shows. The first two episodes have offered us a peek into the day-to-day of keeping the show up and running as well as something about the relationship between Keith Nelson and Stephanie Monse.
With episode 3 and 4 we are starting to get a feel for how the story this 10 part web-series will flesh out. After having lost all sponsorship the Bindelstiffs are still intent on hitting the road with a new show for the season. To do this they need to strip down to a bare minimum of performers and support and, most importantly, they need a theme. The presidential elections of this year (that’s 2008 for all you google time travelers) offer the perfect idea. Keith is going to run for president as Kinko the Clown.
It’s a voyeuristic treat watching how the show develops from rough idea to rehearsals. And, excuse me if I get a little sappy, kind of inspiring how these folks just keep plugging away at it, despite all the hurdles in their way.
the Bottom Line:
