Self-dubbed Viral Video Genius Kevin Nalty aka. “Nalts” is truly a productive wonder to me. He is a full-time professional marketing big-wig, poom-bah (director, VP, something of that caliber) for a Fortune 100 business. He’s married with several kids. He makes 2-4 blog posts daily on his own blog (and not just 4 sentence quickies). AND he’s created over 600 videos for Youtube over the last 2 years. I think that he must never sleep…
Nalts is a comedian / prankster at heart so a lot of his videos have to do with him either goofing on unsuspecting people in public or getting others to do something silly while he films their reactions (kind of like a low-key Jackass). But his videos, like many of the home-grown Youtube celebrity bunch, revolve around him, his family and his friends. I always find it interesting to observe how a normal guy has been able to garner such a large andd loyal following of people without a big PR team. Obviously a lot of that can be put down to hard work. That work pays off regularly since Nalts video’s usually get 5 or 6 digit viewer hits.
Critics of Nalts will certainly cite the usually poor technical quality of his videos (bad lighting, amateurish camera work, crude editing) and probably his childish themes (farting in public, taking a hamster for a walk, pranking his kids and friends). It’s not as if he couldn’t make more polished videos -he does know his way around a camera and editing software. It’s just that he doesn’t see the need to do so. Why bother when his audience doesn’t care? And he’s right.
If you actually peruse the many hundreds of videos he’s made, you’ll find a wide variety of themes and subject matter – not just pranks on kids, friends and small rodent abuse – those are just some of his more popular videos. Nalts is, despite his prankster demeanor, a very smart and thoughtful guy – you just have to follow along in his blog for awhile to see what I mean.
He’s fascinated with all aspects of the online video revolution and has become quite an expert in the field. Check out his free e-book about how to get popular on Youtube…with no talent, ahem. Hell, Martin Sargent even dubbed him an Internet Superstar, so what more do you want?
Full-disclosure: I’ve not watched all 600+ video by Nalts. Of the few hundred that I HAVE seen, this one is my favorite:
That’s classic Nalts, right there. If you’ve not had a chance to get to know him a little better – drop everything and go watch some of his videos – RIGHT NOW! and If you’re interested in getting to know something of his more introspective side go check out his blog – his regulars (those people reading and commenting on blog regularly) are a hoot ‘n a holler too.

Thanks for the shout-out, homeslice. And the balanced feedback. If I wasn’t so lazy I think I’d put more care into my videos. Just seconds ago I was brainstorming with a coworker about doing something to humiliate myself in public again (ala mall pranks). Feeling the calling.
