With so many damn sites crowding the online alleyways trying to hock us their goods, it’s hard to know just where to look for good online video. That’s why I’ll be reviewing not just shows and producers, but also the sites that provide you with video content – I call ‘em the aggregators.
Recommending Youtube in my last post about where to catch some good online video content might have seemed disingenuous to some of you, so today I bring you a really excellent site that you most might not know. It’s called VideoJug.com.
With the tag-line “Life Explained. On Film.” you would be correct in guessing that this video aggregator is all about how-to and DIY videos. It’s an interesting concept and one that seems to have found fertile ground – as there are literally thousands of videos available on VideoJug.com. And you can find videos on just about any topic: Food& Drink, Love & Sex, Beauty & Style, Parenting, etc…
I spent over 2 hours last night watching videos about tying ties, wearing sarangs and chosiong the proper suit. Don’t ask. The point is that the amount of content is staggering and about 80% of the content was exceptionally well done. The other 20% was good.
Here’s the complete review:
The website is well set up and you can find videos about your topic quite easily. The site is also quite “sticky” in the sense that there are always recommendations for other videos in the same or similar theme.
Though nowhere as large as a site like Youtube, I think that you’ll be plesantly surprised at just how many videos you can find – even in obscure topic areas.
The community at VideoJug seems to be quite active and, based upon the comments and videos uploaded, much more postitive than at other video aggregating sites. Videos are user rated and you can share videos.
Since the videos are made from a wide variety of producers, the qualtiy is certainly not consistent. They are generally of better quality than you’d expect, however the full-screen mode doesn’t really look so hot with most of the videos.
There is a monthly contest for “most viewed” videos. Monetary prizes are awarded to the top three most viewed video producers for the month.
the Bottom Line:
