You know, after reading all the press about NBC’s Gemini Division I was convinced that it was THE big test balloon for mainstream media in our online video crawlspace. But then I saw Dr. Horrible. And then I saw Strike.tv. Now I’m watching ComaReel Pop) and I have to say that the idea that Gemini Division is the only big-dog in our little online video playground is patently wrong. Coma can be seen exclusively on Sony’s “Crackle” video platform.  aside: interestingly enough I happened to see a banner ad for Kim Evey’s Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show which reminded me that they were sponsored by Sony too. Anyhow, here’s the rundown on Coma:
Coma is a gritty thriller that tells the story of Lennox (Michael Madsen), a cop on the trail of a mayor (George Hamilton) who’s in league with the Mob. When Lennox is shot and slips into a coma, we get a closer look at the chain of events—and the beautiful woman—that sent him to the hospital.
Check out the first episode:

You skeptics out there must be asking...”but what’s the point” and you’d be half right. I know, I know  the first episode which you can watch here is seriously thin on story, but the 2nd episode quickly catches you up on the show.

So, why should you be watching Coma? Easy, because this is one of several main-stream media attempts to push into the internet video space and the success and failures of this show -among others – will help to determine what direction the medium will take in years to come.

So while Coma may be a tad thin on story just yet, it’s big on (post-)production values. The imagery and editing are amazing. Sure Film Noir isn’t every-one’s bag but you have to hand it to them, they’ve achieved a stunning look, a powerful atmosphere with very little in the way of stage scenery, CGI, etc. This is, in effect, the result of some masterful editing and other assundry post-production work. This is the kind of thing a dedicated and knowledgeable amateur might come close to with the right software (Final Cut Pro, anyone?).

And that’s why you should be watching. It sets the benchmark just a bit higher. Someone out there, some hungry amateur will see it and say, “I can do that” , and that, my friends, is how we push the other side of the envelope.

the Bottom Line:

Coma gets 3 out of 5 stars. It’s visually fascinating but thin on story so far. I’ll do a check up again in another few episodes to see if the plot has developed enough to award (or subtract) any more stars.
