Ilike irreverent, border-line comedy, the kind of stuff that you watch with your buddies but would never admit to watching in polite company…but here’s the thing, it’s really easy to fuck-up this kind of comedy. To take a potentially funny idea and to turn it into a great steaming big pile of…ahem, something not worth watching (the meat grinder show, anyone?). So I’m always happy to find an online video show that actually gets it right. CRACKLE’s “Star-ving” featuring Married With Children’s David Faustino (Bud Bundy) and Parker Lewis Can’t Lose’s Corin Nemec (Parker Lewis).
Season one will consist of 13 episodes, 7 of which are live as of this article. What’s it about? I’ll save you actually having to read, here’s the intro reel:
The comedic timing is perfect- thanks in part to clever script (Dave and Corin)and some good post-production, this is obviously professionally done. I should also mention that there have been some pretty great celebrity cameo’s in each episode (Gilbert Gottfried, Coolio, Ron Jeremy and fellow MWC alumni Ed O’Neil and Christina Applegate). In short, this is a show I’d actually dust off my old TV and turn on to see.
Then again, you probably wouldn’t see thie one on TV…there’s too much foul language, poo-humor and waaaay too many scenes with Dave in nothing but his tighty whites and one horrifically funny scene of Corin’s bare, un-wiped ass (ep. 2)…not to mention the that they’ve killed an overweight “retard”, used the “N” word in Compton, Jew jokes, suicide jokes, naked boobs (ep. 5) and lots of other unmentionable things that the FCC would never let you watch…so they are confined to the small screen. Thank god, ’cause I for one appreciate the influx of professional talent and creativity into our online video crawl space.
CRACKLE has done it again and I’d recommend that all you serious online video watchers get off the Youtube crack-pipe and check out what Sony has been up to lately.
Hey video junkies, it’s Halloween and I know that you really would like nothing better than to turn out the lights, sit back somewhere warm and cozy (it’s snow-raining out my window tonight and I bet it sucks where you are too), grab some of that candy you mugged off the last kids who rang [...]
San Fransisco filmmaker Michael Jacobs (Audience of One) gives us web video junkies a taste of his documentary work in Sony Crackle’s American Dreamers. There are currently 6 bite-sized episodes, each featuring a close (if quick) look at some of America’s fringe citizenry – yes, like the Bindlestiffs, but a lot more off-kilter.
Dan Levy has a new project with Sony’s Crackle: the My Long Distance Relationship Show. It’s a concept somewhat reminiscent of the HBO Labs show Hooking Up in that it deals with college students keeping their relationship together online. In Dan’s case (he plays a hopelessly in love Sam) it’s keeping the high-school flame (Smantha) alive by Skype across the nation with each other.
